Poem: Once, I Feared the Dark

This is a poem about monsters. But these monsters aren’t tentacled or from outer space. These monsters live among us.

As a child, it made sense

to fear the dark.

Even before my sight blurred,

rendering every nighttime excursion to the bathroom

a tiny trial in terrifying, abstract shapes,

I knew.
